Green
Mountain Eco Route - The world's first biodiversity wine route
Biodiversity refers to the various systems and processes that allow
life to persist over time. When biodiversity is intact, species
and ecosystems are resilient and adaptive to environmental changes.
But when biodiversity is lost, nature responds unpredictably and
natural resources may be destroyed. A biodiversity wine route will
expose visitors to both the wine and the biodiversity experience
of each participating producer.

Winelands. The vineyards are on a mountain plateau 420 metres above
sea level, surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, and overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean. In a country where cool sites are precious,
these vineyards are like gold – the grapes ripening up to
two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance.
Iona is South Africa's coolest vineyard site.

Ross Gower Wines
South Hill - The Vineyard
- www.southhill.co.za
South Hill is located at the south eastern end of the Elgin valley,
seven and a half kilometers from the N2 highway along The Valley
Road.
If the general climate of Elgin is considered uniquely well suited
to the growing of premium quality grapes, then the meso-climate
on South Hill is even more so. With no shortage of water in the
valley and a high annual rainfall, the Elgin area is the envy of
many farmers in this arid land. High rainfall does lead to a much
higher risk of infection of diseases such as Downy Mildew and Sour
Rot, however. Although South Hill has the benefit of plentiful water,
the farm is in a rain shadow. This means that we have a third of
the annual rainfall of farms in the north western part of the valley.
The drip irrigation in the vineyards is an insurance policy rather
than a necessity and allows for greater manipulation of the vines
in the pursuit of excellent quality fruit.
Beaumont
Wine
Once an 18th century outpost for the Dutch East India Company, Compagnes
Drift farm in Bot River, is now home to Beaumont Wines, a family-run
winery with a proud tradition of making individualistic wines from
ancient clay-rich soils in the Walker Bay region. Founded by Raoul
and Jayne Beaumont, son Sebastian is the winemaker with daughter
Ariane assisting in management.

Nabot
Wildekrans
Wine Estate
Wildekrans Wines is a small boutique winery situated near the southern
tip of Africa. The cool Atlantic sea winds and the lean soils allow
their grapes to reach optimal ripeness and impart the characteristic
cool climate aromatic profile that their wines are renown for.
Villiersdorp

Founded in 1922, the cellar is situated in Villiersdorp in a lavish
and mountainous area, ±100km from Cape Town on the R43. The

dream come true and moved to South Africa for good to established
this small boutique winery in the middle of the Cape Winelands.
They now produce their very own personal red wine from Merlot grapes,
trying to express all the beauty of aromas, colours and textures.
The Bein's are dedicated to uncompromising quality throughout the
entire process from planting to bottling, and are convinced this
will find its expression in the wine and eventually your appreciation.
Golf:
Arabella
Golf Estate
Voted the number two golf course in South Africa and the top golf
course in the Western Cape, the Arabella Golf Club – home
to the Nelson Mandela Invitational – stretches through rolling
fairways, deceptive bunkers and challenging water traps. A truly
unique golf course set on the banks of the Bot River lagoon and
fringed by indigenous fynbos. Designed and built in 1999 by celebrated
South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who is also
credited with the design of Western Cape courses de Zalze and Steenberg,
this classic parkland course has spectacular views across the Bot
River lagoon and across the Kogelberg mountain range.
Clovelly
Golf Club
Nestled in the pristine and tranquil Silvermine Valley close to
Fish Hoek in Cape Town lies Clovelly Country Club. With one of the
finest golf courses in South Africa, Clovelly offers its members
and visitors a memorable experience.
Devonvale
Golf Estate
The magnificent 18-hole championship golf course needs little introduction
offering a regular challenge to both local and international golfers.
The course is interesting every time you play it, with abundant
bird life all around the fairways and water features. The original
layout, designed by Ken Elkin, who designed many of the Capes better
known courses, has seen several improvements of late. The introduction
of indigenous plants and the removal of alien trees have not only
beautified the environment, but have created panoramic vistas of
the surrounding vineyards and mountains.
De
Zalze Golf Estate
The De Zalze Golf Course situated within the De Zalze Winelands
Golf Estate was designed by Peter Matkovich [course architect for
both Leopard Rock and Arabella] who has made the most of the stunning
setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy.
The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes with its main
defences coming from the water features on several of the holes
as well as the oak tree lined Blaauwklippen River which winds its
way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals.
The golf course, open since 2000 with the brand new Cape styled
thatch clubhouse [opened December 2003] is an exciting addition
to the group of international standard championship golf courses
recently built in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
Erinvale
Golf Club
Gary Player was the designer of the course and little of his immaculate
challenges has been altered. The introduction of trees and the considerable
care of manicuring the surrounds are nevertheless noticeable improvements.
The first nine holes are on the low, flat part of the estate and
the second nine are on high, undulating ground. This will give you
two different feels, but there remains a common thread – that
is the standard of the superbly shaped greens, with truly consistent
putting surfaces. The 1st hole, a dogleg right epitomises the Erinvale
experience. You can choose a safe line straight off the tee leaving
a long second to an elevated green well protected by bunkers and
water to the right. The more ambitious will cut the corner with
their drive. This requires a carry over water and a ditch, as well
as the avoidance of trees. The reward is a short iron to a difficult
target. Throughout the course there are majestic mountain backdrops,
panoramic views of the surrounding hillsides planted with vine and
sparkling views of the ocean from the higher vantage points. I have
chosen to describe the finishing holes on both nines. These are
excellent holes. However, I assure you that the experience and scenery
around the other 16 will be cherished by the participants in the
South African Airways Open as well as those of you who get to play
on this superb layout in the winelands.
Milnerton
Golf Club
Milnerton Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 seaside course situated
in a leafy suburb just 10 minutes north of the city of Cape Town.
Surrounded by natural beauty, the course is a pleasure to the senses
and a challenge to even the most experienced golfer - especially
when the prevailing South Easter, affectionately known as the "Cape
Doctor" - makes her house calls in the summer months!
Nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the RietVlei river, this
lush links-type course is relatively flat with few trees. But with
the sea and the lagoon bordering most holes, and the 7 beautiful
water holes waiting to claim the wayward shot, it offers a truly
unique golfing experience! Typical of many links-type courses, you
will play the first 9 holes out, enjoy a light meal at the halfway
house, and then return back to the clubhouse via the second 9.
Pearl
Valley Golf Estate
Nestled in the heart of South Africa's beautiful Cape Winelands,
Pearl Valley Golf Estates is recognized internationally as a prestigious
destination for world-class golf and premium lifestyle. But to its
residents, guests, partners and investors, it is something altogether
more… it is a place of natural splendour, of good friends
and excellent cuisine, of appreciation of life’s finer pleasures
– and, of course, a spectacular round of golf.
Royal
Cape Golf Club
A championship course having hosted the SA Open 10 times and the
SA Amateur Championships 8 times. Royal Cape welcomes all golfing
visitors. We strive to present a golfing environment that is enjoyable,
memorable and a true test of golf without making your game here
onerous. Our clubhouse will enhance your enjoyment of your day with
us and your golfing needs can be taken care of by our well trained
PGA professionals.
Somerset-West
Golf Club
Somerset West is essentially a golf course of three different parts,
but in no way does that change its feeling or style. It is a parkland
type course of 5942 meters in length and is an 18 hole par 72. As
you play take time to look at the magnificent Helderberg mountain
that gently slopes down to the course and look out for the White
Squirrel's that live around the first (top) nine holes. Somerset
West has the true feeling of a Country Club and the 19th Hole will
remind you of the importance of good company
Stellenbosch
Golf Club
One of the best golf courses in South Africa. This championship
course which hosted, among other tournaments, the South African
Masters and South African Open, will test your golfing skills. The
course is - compared to those in Cape Town and on the Cape Peninsula
- well protected from the wind. The - relatively narrow - fairways
are lined with trees. Hole 8 (par 5) requires for instance an absolutely
straight stroke in order for the ball not to land in vines or bushes.
